Bed bugs have made a major comeback in the USA. The influx of activity in recent years has been exacerbated by many things like chemical resistance, global travel ,as well as public ignorance. Due to these reasons, bed bugs are unfortunately becoming a part of everyday life, with infestations common in homes, apartments, hotels, nursing homes, and schools. They also happen in hospitals, libraries, theaters, offices, and on public transportation. Wherever people are, so are bed bugs. 

Adult bed bugs are small and reddish-brown, with oval, flattened bodies. Their coloration is similar to an apple seed and are sometimes mistaken for ticks, or baby cockroaches. Nymphs, baby bed bugs, look like a smaller lighter version of their adult counterparts. Bed bugs don’t fly, or jump but instead can crawl quickly on walls, floors ,box springs, and other surfaces in the area they have affected.

Bed bugs are resilient. They can live for months without food, and can survive even longer without food when it’s colder, 55 degrees or less to be exact.

It is not wise to vacate a premise or office in the hopes of starving the bed bugs, they’ll just find someone else to bite! When a food source is removed bed bugs will retreat into the walls and become dormant or even worse, infect other units. This is common in apartment complexes and office buildings. 

The common bed bug (Cimex lectulariusprefers feeding on humans, however our furry companions aren’t safe either. Bed bugs usually bite their victim at night while they are sleeping. Hungry bed bugs can also switch it up and feed during the day. They will change their feeding hours to mirror their victims. They feed by piercing the skin with their sharp beak like mouth, it’s used to draw blood from the victim until it becomes engorged. Engorgement takes three to 10 minutes, but because the bite is painless, people don’t notice they’ve been bitten. Bed bugs feed on both humans, cats, dogs, birds and other warm blooded pets. Bed bugs can also hitch a ride in your animal’s fur, and there are no fur treatments to keep them away from pets.  This can cause discomfort to everyone living in a home with a bed bug infestation.
